Stones into schools : promoting peace with books, not bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Greg Mortensen got lost coming down from K2 and wandered into a small village on the slopes of the mountain. The villagers looked after him and before he left he promised one of the children he would come back and build a school. Because of this encounter Greg founded the Central Asia Institute, an educational charity, that provides schools for girls in the remotest areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. From mountaineer to builder of schools, sound familiar, one of his inspirations was Sir Edmund Hilary.
This book gives you insights into the value of education in this very poor part of the world. Education that we all take for granted. It is a fascinating tale of building relationships with the local people who work for the Institute and in turn the relationships they build with the villagers. There are harrowing stories and some very uplifting ones. It is impressive to read about one man’s dream that has become reality through hard work and the difference he has made to so many lives. This is one of the most inspirational books I have read for a while. “If you educate a boy, you educate an individual, but if you educate a girl, you educate a community.”
